  585. The Grasshopper Sparrow is a small sparrow of open fields, weedy areas and prairies of North America.

  589. This is the SUPERCILLIUM area above the eye.
  590.    In birds like sparrows that have distinctive stripes on the crown of their heads the individual stripes may be referred to as the "eyebrow" area (the supercillium), the eyeline (running behind the eye), and the median stripe (a central dark or light stripe running over the middle of the crown of the head). Mainly these terms are a convenience for describing the coloration of a particular species.

Small songbirds (passerines) like the Grasshopper sparrow often have many distinctive markings on their heads. In ground-dwelling field and prairie birds like these the head stripes are a form of camouflage, breaking up the silhouette of the bird and allowing it to blend in to the surroundings.

  600. Like other members of its family (the Fringillidae) the Grasshopper sparrow has a heavy concical seed-cracking bill. In sparrows the bill is well adapted to an omnivorous diet of seeds, insects and small fruits.
